Honor the Game

Athletics are seen as one way of implementing the mission of the CYO. The objective of CYO athletics is to be well organized, uniform in philosophy, properly supervised and provide opportunities for youth to develop physical fitness, self-discipline, mental alertness, and an attitude of good sportsmanship based upon Catholic principles of fair play and cooperation.

Each athletic contest is something to cherish and enjoy.

A game to be proud of involves:

  • Intense competition between the lines
  • Behavior that Honors the Game by athletes, coaches and fans

Honoring the game is an integral part of the culture of CYO competitions. Culture is simply, "The way we do things in the CYO."

Honoring the Game gets to the roots of the matter and means that athletes, coaches, and fans show respect for:

  • Rules- refusing to bend the rules to win
  • Opponents- recognizing that a worthy opponent brings out our best
  • Officials- acting with respect even when we disagree
  • Teammates- refusing to do anything that reflects poorly on our team
  • Self- living up to our own standards regardless of what others do

How you can help Honor The Game and make CYO athletics something to proud of:

  • Cheer for your team, not against the opposition
  • Encourage those around you to Honor The Game
  • Refrain from gloating if your team wins. Simply enjoy it
  • Focus on the good plays your team made if your team loses
  • Refrain from expressions of negativity to the other team’s fans
